Celebrating the life of
Pamela Elaine Poetter
April 13, 1953 - October 01, 2011
Pamela Elaine Poetter
Savannah, Ga. - Pamela Elaine Poetter, beloved mentor and influential leader at the Savannah College of Art and Design, died at home on October 1, 2011 following a long illness. She was 58.
Pam was born in Atlanta, Ga., on April 13, 1953, the daughter of May Lewis Poetter and the late Paul E. Poetter. She was a 1971 graduate of Briarwood High School, in East Point, Ga., where she was known for her talent on the stage, whether singing, dancing or playing the piano.
She attended Furman University in Greenville, S.C., where she graduated in 1975 with honors, earning a bachelor's degree and teaching certification in elementary education. She began her career in education with a position in the admission and records office at the University of Tennessee, Nashville. From there, she went on to other higher education administrative positions at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, and then at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky., where she entered the field of writing, editing and print production.
In 1988, Pam moved to Savannah, Ga., and began a distinguished career with the Savannah College of Art and Design SCAD. As the university's first director of publications and communications, Pam became known as a wordsmith, writing and editing a variety of university publications throughout the years, such as course catalogs, faculty and alumni magazines, accreditation reports, recruitment materials, and more. Pam was also founding editor of The Georgia Guardian, a weekly community newspaper published by the university. The paper was published in Savannah for nearly 10 years, and was the recipient of the Georgia Press Association's highest award for General Excellence.
In addition to directing award-winning publications, Pam produced videos and oversaw a weekly television program, SCAD-TV. She worked with a student team to create the college's first website and DVD, and with other students to initiate SCAD student media groups. Most recently, she served as senior vice president for marketing and enrollment management, advising the university's communications and public relations efforts as well as overall recruitment and enrollment of new students for SCAD Savannah, SCAD Atlanta, SCAD Hong Kong and SCAD e-Learning.
In enrollment management, Pam initiated signature SCAD programs including SCAD Days, SCAD Summer Seminars, the SCAD Challenge scholarship competition, and others. She was known for viewing each prospective student as an individual, and inspired the entire enrollment management department to do the same. Individual file reviews and personalized enrollment counselors are hallmarks of the personal approach she imparted as well as the commitment she instilled to help talented students realize their dreams.
Throughout her professional life, Pam was highly regarded for her humble demeanor and boundless energy. To each of her roles over the course of nearly 25 years at SCAD, she brought the highest standard of excellence, along with creative spontaneity and a graceful human touch.
Pam is survived by her three beloved children, Kevin Stogner, of Washington, D.C.; Kimberly Stogner Shreve, of Savannah, Ga.; and Adam Afifi, of Savannah, Ga. She is also survived by her mother, May Poetter, of Savannah, Ga.; and sister, Paula Wallace, of Savannah, Ga.
Funeral services will be held at 10am on Wednesday, October 5, 2011 at Skidaway Island Methodist Church, 54 Diamond Causeway.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be sent to SCAD's Pamela Poetter Scholarship Fund, at P.O. Box 3146, Savannah, GA 31401.

I am so overwhelmed with sadness at Pam’s passing and filled immediately with so many fond memories. My husband and I often met her on our walks and no matter how she was feeling she had a ready smile and a cheerful hello every time we met. She was such an amazingly kind person and a champion for music at SCAD. As a faculty member, Pam quietly helped me find my way into the Performing Arts department and for that I will always be truly grateful. She was tireless in her efforts with students and helped so many find their way to success on campus and into the world. My deepest thoughts and prayers are with all of her family. Pam was such a special lady I can't believe she is gone. I always considered her to be a good friend and I will miss her dearly. She loved so many and asked for so little in return. I feel blessed to have known her and know she is with God in peace. God bless you Pam.
